The Lending Department

The Lending Department stands as the core of the Jersey City Free Public Library. Patrons visit this department to check out, renew, and return materials. They can also seek assistance in locating books and receive recommendations for other library services and resources. Staff members play an integral role by shelving books, overseeing usage statistics, and pursuing overdue materials. One of the prominent services they coordinate is the Interlibrary Loan Service. The Interlibrary Loan Service allows patrons to borrow items from neighboring libraries and offers our library materials to other institutions’ patrons.

Historical Restoration and Modern Upgrades

Located on the second floor of the Main Library, the Lending Department underwent a significant restoration in 2016. This renovation showcased the beautiful Italian Renaissance-style ceiling that had been obscured. Alongside these aesthetic improvements, the department has embraced technological advancements. The outdated paper card catalog system has transitioned online, introducing a new automated circulation system. Patrons can now explore the entire library collection from anywhere with internet access. Access the online catalog here.

Your Access to Library Services: The Library Card

The library card is essential for those wishing to borrow materials and tap into the library’s services. You can obtain one directly from the Lending Department or learn more online here. If a particular book eludes your search, consider using the Interlibrary Loan service. Submit an ILL request by navigating to the form provided below.
