Happy International Yoga Day from JCFPL!
Today JCFPL celebrates International Yoga Day, a day to honor the practice of the spiritual discipline which focuses on harmony between mind and body. Yoga’s origins can be traced to northern India over 5,000 years ago. The word yoga was first mentioned in ancient sacred texts called the Rig Veda. The Vedas are a set of four ancient sacred texts written in Sanskrit. Yoga is amongst the six schools of philosophy in Hinduism and is also a major part of Buddhism and its meditation practices. Today yoga is quite popular with an estimation of 10% of Americans practicing it regularly.
Since the JCFPL was established in 1889, we have been dedicated to contributing to our communities’ well-being by offering access to programs promoting health and wellness, including Yoga classes at our Branch Libraries.
