Well, they say all good things must come to an end... even if we don't want them to! On Friday, November 23, 2018, an appreciative crowd of more than 200 community members gathered at Miller Branch Library for the final Evening of Live Entertainment - the Jersey City Free Public Library Director's annual Day-After-Thanksgiving concert. This was the 27th year of the event, as well as the last, because Director Priscilla Gardner will be retiring in 2019 after 50 years of service to the Jersey City Free Public Library.
The evening was a roaring success, with musical performances by PRIME, Men of Worship, Soul Generation featuring Cliff Perkins, and Joe Bataan and his entire orchestra. All the performers lit up the stage, and had the audience singing along and dancing in the aisles. It was truly a night to remember for all present, especially because of the many moving tributes to Director Gardner for her decades of dedication and service to the Library.
The Evening of Live Entertainment has its origins in the talent shows for Lincoln, Dickinson, and Snyder High School students that Director Gardner began hosting 35 years ago at Miller Branch Library. PRIME has been performing at Miller Branch Library for almost 30 years, and Soul Generation for 21! Joe Bataan has graced the Miller stage for over 15 years. Many other performers, such as the late Tony "Showtime" Riley, Force MD's, TruSol, and The Persuaders, have also performed at various times over the years. The annual Evening of Live Entertainment is a chapter in the history of the Jersey City Free Public Library that will be remembered for many years to come. We congratulate Director Gardner on her many achievements and her upcoming retirement from the Library!
