On Thursday, May 17, Greenville Branch Library hosted a very special awards ceremony to recognize some of the most dedicated participants of the Spring Story Hour season.
One day during Story Hour, Senior Assistant Librarian Deyana Hopson was telling the students of New Life Dream Academy about a recent time she had gone bike-riding, and she learned that none of the youngsters had a bike to call their own. After thinking about it for a few days, Ms. Deyana decided to take action.
"I spoke to my family and friends and I started asking for small donations to purchase bikes for the kids," she said.
"These students were so diligent," she said. "They came to every Story Hour, even in bad weather. I wanted to do something really special to thank them."
Ms. Deyana raised over $1,300 in small donations from family, friends, and her colleagues at the Library. With what she raised, she was able to purchase 27 bicycles for the students, who range in age from 2 to 4 years old.
The special surprise was revealed to the students at the closing celebration for the Story Hour, where the children also were treated to lunch, sweet treats, and a craft and sing-along.
"It was such an incredible feeling to see their faces just light up when they saw the bikes they were getting," said Ms. Deyana. "I am so happy that we were able to do this for them."
