Philippine Consul General Donates Books to Five Corners Branch Library

The Jersey City Free Public Library was honored to accept a donation of books from the Consul General of the Philippines, in a special ceremony at Five Corners Branch Library on Friday, October 20, 2017.

In honor of Filipino American History Month, which is observed in October each year, the Five Corners Branch Library partnered with the Consulate General of the Republic of the Philippines to expand the Library’s collection of books about the history and culture of the Philippines. Books by noted historian Ambeth Ocampo on the national hero José Rizal, as well as bilingual Filipino-English children’s books, were included in the donation.

The ceremony, which was held in the Mildred H. Hunke Auditorium at the Five Corners Branch Library, was attended by the Consul General Theresa Dizon-De Vega, Jersey City Council President Rolando Lavarro, Jersey City Free Public Library Board President Curt Harris, and Five Corners Branch Library head Susan Stewart. Several members of the Filipino-American community were on hand to witness the turnover, including Linda Mayo of the Philippine-American Concerned Citizen Action League (PACCAL). A reception followed the ceremony, with refreshments from Red Ribbon Bakeshop and FilStop, courtesy of Five Corners Branch Library and PACCAL.

“We are delighted and honored to accept this generous donation from the Philippine Consul General,” said Stewart. “The Filipino-American community is a very important part of what makes the Five Corners neighborhood – and truly, the whole city – special.”

“The Library prides itself on a commitment and an ability to be a place that is welcoming and inclusive for all communities in Jersey City,” said Harris. “It’s frequently noted that Jersey City is one of the most diverse cities in the nation; we know this firsthand, because it’s reflected in the many communities our patrons represent. We are very grateful that the Consul General has recognized the importance of the Filipino-American community in Jersey City with her generous donation today.”

The books included in the donation were:

  • Five Philippine history books by Ambeth Ocampo: Rizal Without the Overcoat; Looking Back; Two Lunas and Two Mabinis; Storm Chasers; and Independence;
  • Two children’s books published by Adarna House: I Don’t Like to Eat and Idong Adarna.
