The Jersey City Library Literacy Program provides literacy instruction for Hudson County residents aged 18 and up. Literacy Program students range from non-readers to fifth-grade-level readers. Some speak English, others do not; some are learning basic arithmetic and others are getting ready to take the TASC (formerly known as the GED Test). The program offers tutoring in Basic Literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), Citizenship Preparation, and Math. Reading Horizons, a computerized phonics program based on the Orton-Gillingham method, is available for Basic Literacy and ESL students at the Main Library and some Branch Libraries.
