FAQs

What can I look forward to with the new Communipaw branch?
The Communipaw Branch will be the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) and Makerspace hub for the Jersey City Free Public Library system. Here, there will be opportunities for people of all ages to check out electronics such as laptops, tablets, and wireless hotspots. Whether you want to try out assistive devices to accommodate a disability, learn to code for your local robotics team, brush up on STEAM skills for a career change, or learn computer basics in a nonjudgmental space, this is a branch where you will be welcome.

Why is the library creating a new branch?
The creation of the Communipaw Branch is a reflection of the Jersey City Free Public Library’s commitment to provide resources that our community needs. Both scholastically and professionally, it is becoming more and more important for people to develop digital literacy, media literacy, and technological skills. This new branch will allow us to respond to that trend, not only for the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood, but for our library system as a whole.

Where will the Communipaw Branch be located?
The Communipaw Branch will be located at 295 Johnston Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07304. It is on the first floor of a residential building, and it is a few blocks away from the Liberty State Park light rail stop and a Citi Bike station. It is also served by bus lines 1, 6, and 81.

I notice that the Communipaw Branch will be near where the Lafayette Branch is currently. Does this mean that the Lafayette Branch is closing?
No. The Lafayette Branch will remain open. In fact, the Communipaw Branch will be a sister branch to the Lafayette Branch, and will likely collaborate on various programs.

When will the Communipaw Branch open?
The Communipaw Branch will open in fall 2021. Be sure to check this page periodically for updates on the specific opening date.

I am a community member who is interested in partnering with library workers at the Communipaw Branch to lend my expertise on a STEAM subject or a Makerspace activity. How can I get involved?
We are so pleased that you are enthusiastic about taking an active role to shape this new branch’s offerings. If you are interested in volunteering to lead the way on STEAM and Makerspace activities, please email communipaw@jclibrary.org.
