Registration Begins Saturday, June 1st

for the Jersey City Library 2013 Summer Reading Program

JERSEY CITY, N.J.   May 29, 2013 – With the Memorial Day holiday now past, both parents and children alike will be planning their summer activities, thinking, what’s available for children?

The Summer Reading Program (SRP) at the Jersey City Free Public Library offers just the right structured, yet fun environment to help keep Jersey City children’s reading abilities intact over the summer holiday, and provide wholesome activity during the hot summer months in the city.

Registration begins on Saturday, June 1st, for SRP 2013 at the Bonetti Children’s Room in the Main Library, all nine branches and at the Bookmobile. The Summer Reading Program 2013 runs from Monday, June 24th through Friday, August 16th and features games, great reads, movies, exciting trips, and live performances. Field Station: Dinosaurs will come roaring to the Main Library, with all children and YAs participating in SRP 2013 having the chance to see the performance.

As an incentive for reading many books over the summer, a trip to Funplex is available to young adults (grades 6-8) from each branch or the Bonetti Children’s Room who have achieved reading the highest number. Camp Liberty will also serve as an incentive for children to read, with those reading the highest number, going.

The 2013 theme encompasses a child’s interest in digging – whether in sand down at the shore to that proverbial direct path to China, or for information, when fascinated by a particular topic – and gives young children a path to travel, “Dig Into Reading.” For young adults (YAs), the 2013 theme gives a deeper path for digging, “Beneath the Surface.”

Themes are established by the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), “a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children at the lowest cost possible for their public libraries. By combining resources and working with an exclusive contracted vendor to produce materials designed for CSLP members, public libraries in participating states or systems can purchase posters, reading logs, bookmarks, certificates and a variety of reading incentives at significant savings” ( website). All CSLP materials are free, offered by the New Jersey State Library to public libraries.

All movies have been chosen with either children or YAs in mind, with the individual show times as part of the schedule of each branch or the Bonetti Children’s Room, which can be found on the SRP 2013 outreach flyer available for both throughout the library system.

“We invite all children to come register, to have fun with old friends and new. The library’s Summer Reading Program gives children the chance to do a variety of activities, and to see how fun reading can be,” said Chief Librarian Hussein Odeh, who oversees the Summer Reading Program Committee in 2013 that is co-chaired by Librarians Francina Stevens and Mary Quinn.
