Winner of Councilman Fulop’s Christmas Contest with Newark & Roselle, Jersey City Library Helps Its Programs

JERSEY CITY, NJ   February 23, 2012 – Having dealt with program funding cuts for several years, the Jersey City Free Public Library has Ward E Councilman Steve Fulop, Newark Councilman Anibal Ramos and Roselle Mayor Janel Holley to thank, because of a contest they created in Christmas 2011.

These elected officials, friends for years, each contributed $1,000 for a friendly bet on whose city had the best Christmas decorations. One Facebook page, countless uploaded photos of decorated homes, and many ‘likes’ later, Jersey City was deemed the winner, with the most uploaded photos. Local freelance photographer Richard McCormack’s photo won for the most ‘likes’.

Tuskegee Airman, Lt. Calvin J. Spann to Speak at Miller Branch

JERSEY CITY, NJ   January 30, 2012 – The Jersey City Free Public Library proudly announces the presentation of one of our country’s true heroes – Tuskegee Airman Lt. Calvin J. Spann – who will be one of the featured speakers at the 10th Annual Black History Month program of the Miller Branch Library, 489 Bergen Avenue in Jersey City, on Wednesday, February 29, at 5:30 p.m. SHARP!

This special guest speaks because of the generosity of state, county, city official, library and foundation trustees, employees and friends, all of whom have contributed toward Lt. Spann’s speaking fee, because there has been no program money over the last 3.5 years due to the severe cuts to the library’s budget. All donors who made this program possible will be formally thanked the evening of the Black History Month program.

Bookmobile Off the Road on Thursday Morning, January 5

JERSEY CITY, NJ   January 4, 2012 – As some of us will have colds this winter, every now and then, even the Bookmobile gets sick.

The Bookmobile of the Jersey City Free Public Library will be in for repairs on Thursday morning, January 5, and not able to travel to its scheduled Blue Route stops of P.S. No. 6 (10 – 11:15 a.m.), P.S. No. 27 (12:45 – 2:00 p.m.), and Pershing Field, at Central & Booraem Avenues (2:30 – 4:00 p.m.).

“It is possible that the Bookmobile will be on the road for its regularly scheduled afternoon stops. However, if the Bookmobile is not there, please recognize the repairs will ensure the safety of all those visiting the Bookmobile, as well as library staff,” said Assistant Library Director Sonia Araujo.
