JERSEY CITY, N.J.   July 9, 2013 – What’s a book festival without authors?!

Though a steady stream of writers has applied to present at Tales of Our Cities 2013, it is clear more children’s book authors are needed to round out the program.

Tales of Our Cities 2013, the sixth annual book festival presented by the Jersey City Free Public Library, will be held on Sunday, September 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the lush gardens of Van Vorst Park, a Victorian oasis next to the Main Library in Jersey City (corner of Montgomery Street and Jersey Avenue).

“The book festival exists to celebrate writers and promote reading in Jersey City,” said festival coordinator and Assistant Library Director Sonia Araujo. “We welcome authors of all genres – fiction, non-fiction, mysteries, local history, poetry, spoken word, and of course, children’s books.”

The application deadline for all participants – authors, vendors, sponsors and performers – is Friday, August 2. For application, please go to the library website, Tales of Our Cities link: http://www.jclibrary.org/resources/6th-annual-jersey-city-library-book-festival

Miller Branch Presents Play Written & Directed by Former Member of Kool & The Gang

JERSEY CITY, N.J.   June 5, 2013 – As a backup singer in one of pop music’s most beloved bands, Jersey City’s Kool & The Gang, Renee Connell Walker may not be as well-known as the band.

Her play, The Candle Party, will change that.

The journey of enlightenment sometimes begins in the dark, but in this new play by Ms. Walker, just the glow of a candle can help lighten the way.

The Miller Branch Library, 489 Bergen Avenue in Jersey City, will offer the live stage play, The Candle Party, on Saturday, June 29, at 1 p.m.

JERSEY CITY, N.J.   May 29, 2013 – With the Memorial Day holiday now past, both parents and children alike will be planning their summer activities, thinking, what’s available for children?

The Summer Reading Program (SRP) at the Jersey City Free Public Library offers just the right structured, yet fun environment to help keep Jersey City children’s reading abilities intact over the summer holiday, and provide wholesome activity during the hot summer months in the city.

Registration begins on Saturday, June 1st, for SRP 2013 at the Bonetti Children’s Room in the Main Library, all nine branches and at the Bookmobile. The Summer Reading Program 2013 runs from Monday, June 24th through Friday, August 16th and features games, great reads, movies, exciting trips, and live performances. Field Station: Dinosaurs will come roaring to the Main Library, with all children and YAs participating in SRP 2013 having the chance to see the performance.

As an incentive for reading many books over the summer, a trip to Funplex is available to young adults (grades 6-8) from each branch or the Bonetti Children’s Room who have achieved reading the highest number.
