Jersey City Library Receives $1,500 as part of the NJ State Library Distribution ofBristol-Myers-Squibb Anti-Trust Settlement Grant
JERSEY CITY, N.J. October 11, 2013 – Who wouldn’t like an additional $1,500 to spend?
The Jersey City Free Public Library found itself in that position when fielding a request by the
New Jersey State Library to apply for the settlement funds from the Bristol-Myers-Squibb anti-trust lawsuit.
According to Deputy State Librarian Kathleen Moeller-Peiffer of the New Jersey State Library, “These funds became available based upon a settlement reached by numerous State Attorneys General against Bristol-Myers-Squibb. A cash settlement was made to the State of New Jersey in the amount of $157,690.81. After consultation with the New Jersey State Library, the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice submitted a proposed New Jersey distribution plan, which was approved by the Court and which provides that program to eligible public libraries for the purchase of books or other durable materials relating to the treatment, diagnosis and greater understanding of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, Kaposi’s Sarcoma and non-small cell lung cancer.
“All New Jersey public libraries that submitted the most recent Public Library Annual Report and that submitted a report for the previous two grant settlements are eligible for these funds, which will be distributed on a pro rata population basis,” continued Ms. Moeller-Peiffer.
“We purchased a total of 94 books from 18 titles covering the targeted subjects,” said Chief Librarian Hussein Odeh, who handled the pharmaceutical company’s anti-trust settlement funds grant application for the Jersey City library. “Aside from ordering multiple copies for our nine branches, Main Library and the Bookmobile, we actually spent a little of our own money (slightly over $100, additionally) to purchase books that were irresistible titles to add, and others in Spanish that are available in Biblioteca Criolla.”
“Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are pleased to offer new books with current scientific information on breast and other types of cancer,” added Library Director Priscilla Gardner.
Since 1972, Jersey City’s Biblioteca Criolla is the only entity within a public library system in New Jersey dedicated exclusively to Spanish works, whether print or recorded, and in presenting Latino culture from all Spanish nationalities.
