On November 21, 2013, Biblioteca Criolla had the opportunity to mix up things and bring something new to their story hours. Rabbi Debra Hachen of Jersey City offered to do special story hour for “our little ones.” She read stories that had a multicultural theme and also played her guitar.
Rabbi Hachen pointed out details in the story and illustrations, talking about the ideas presented in the story, engaging the parents, day care workers and of course, the children. When she played her guitar, the children sang and danced along.
Instead of the children’s area in Criolla, this story hour was held in the main, big room due to amount of people in attendance. In attendance there were 38 children and 20 adults.
“Rabbi Hachen was ordained at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 1980 and then served twenty-four years in Massachusetts, where she was the founding rabbi of a Reform congregation that grew to 500 households. When her husband’s career brought them to this area, she served several years as rabbi at a Reform congregation in Bergen County before moving to Jersey City to join the Temple Beth-El family.” http://www.betheljc.org/aboutus/leadership/
A special THANK YOU goes to Librarian Janice Greenberg of Technical Services for presenting the idea to Rabbi Debra, and to Criolla staff member Beatriz Urrutia for following up and bringing this special story hour together.
