Dr. Seuss Celebration
Children Wish ‘Happy Birthday’ to Dr. Seuss with a Special Dr. Seuss Story Corner at the Bonetti Children’s Room
I see them up. I see them down. I see them all around town! Yes, I like them, celebrating Dr. Seuss! Yes, I like them, enjoying Dr. Seuss!
By now, everyone knows that Dr. Seuss’ birthday is celebrated on March 2, especially with the National Education Association’s Read Across America highlighting staged readings of Dr. Seuss’ beloved rhyming stories all across America on Monday, March 3, 2014. So it’s no wonder, that the Bonetti Children’s Room at Jersey City’s Main Library created a special story corner, honoring the incomparable Dr. Seuss, and celebrating him and his wonderful stories on March 6, during his birthday week!
Children’s Librarian Francina Stevens read several of Dr. Seuss’ books to a gaggle of giggling little gods and goddesses, interspersing those readings with singing and dancing – right out of their seats! – of songs that make the body wiggle to get those energetic charges ready to listen to more Dr. Seuss.
Making Science Fun with Dr. Ainissa G. Ramirez
Dr. Ainissa G. Ramirez came to visit the Marion Branch early on Monday, December 30, 2013, before she was to do a lecture at the Liberty Science Center. In her youth, she lived in the Marion section, and the Marion Branch Library was the library she would come to as a child after school. As Dr. Ramirez was telling this to Marion Branch manager Dolores Reyes, she was so inspired and humbled by her story and visit, knowing full well that other children will be inspired too, regarding the story of Dr. Ramirez. Dolores had secretly wished and fantasized that someday a celebrity would come in unexpectedly, like Angelina Jolie or Brad. But the visit by Dr. Ramirez surpassed that secret wish!
This wonderful visit from Dr. Ramirez made the light bulb above Dolores’ head shine brightly for a future possible program at the Marion Branch, which could be titled, Crash My Library? :D This would be an opportunity for those who have been inspired by the Jersey City Free Public Library, to come in unannounced, bringing in a short story of how the library inspired them. I will then take a picture of that visitor outside in front of the library.
Guitar Lessons with Miss Reena at the Marion Branch
Children in the Marion Branch enjoy different type of activities throughout the year. This FREE program is teaching children the basics of guitar playing by staff member Renee Campbell. Marion staff members are dedicated to servicing the area residents with the best of Library services
Bonky the Elf Visits the Bonetti Children's Room
Bonky the Elf visited the Bonetti Children’s Room on December 11, 2013, and brought her bag of tricks to entertain over 150 children and adults. She performed magic, creating delightful laughter throughout the audience. When reading the children’s story, Keeping Christmas, Bonky the Elf created a different kind of magic, enrapturing little minds and hearts (including the adults!) with Christmas glee. Amazingly, Bonky the Elf performed for nearly one hour, to the enchantment of everyone. Merry Christmas!
