Resolutions of the Mayor and Common Council of Jersey City commencing February 5, 1867 and ending March 30, 1869 – Bottom, first entry, May 5, 1867. Notice the Jersey City Mayor’s signature: Orestes Cleveland, who served as mayor twice, initially from May 2, 1864 – May 5, 1867. During his second term (May 3, 1886 – May 1, 1892) he signed legislation establishing the Free Public Library of Jersey City in 1889.

SALES OF LAND by the CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF HUDSON on the Eleventh day of November A.D. 1856 for unpaid taxes in 1855 to March 13, 1872 for unpaid Taxes for Water Rents of 1870, City of Hudson – Statement from City Clerk’s office, Jersey City, N.J., December 9, 1880. Notice that this statement identifies this as Jersey City, not Hudson City, since, by 1880, Jersey City annexed Hudson City. Also notice that it took 10 years to confirm and process this information, instead of the near-instantaneous processing of information today.
