Mardi Gras Fundraiser 2008

“Laisser le Bon Rouleau de Temps,” the French phrase, “Let the Good Times Roll,” often heard down in New Orleans the week before Lent, was a welcome phrase up here too, as the Jersey City Free Public Library Foundation, Inc. held its annual September fundraiser with a Mardi Gras theme. Last year’s crowd-pleasing theme, Hawaiian-style, brought with it the expectation for this year, and this widely (and wildly!) successful Mardi Gras did not disappoint.

The Board of Trustees of the Jersey City Free Public Library Foundation, Inc. – Kevin J. Ward, Chairman; Morris Winograd, Vice Chairman; Michael Ryan, Treasurer; Elizabeth Spinelli, Recording Secretary; Joseph Panepinto Jr., Corresponding Secretary; Joseph A. Turula; Margaret Crimmins; Kathleen Hartye; Samantha Newman-Webster; Robert Burke; and Priscilla Gardner, Executive Director – welcomed the library’s loyal patrons to enjoy Mardi Gras.

For the fourth straight year, P.J. Ryan’s (thanks, Mike!), 172 First Street in Jersey City, hosted the Library Foundation fundraiser, this time on a Friday evening, September 19, 2008 at 5 p.m., with Cajun food included in the nominal ticket price. Two live bands kept the place jumping, especially the early evening jazz sounds!

You’ll see lots of purple, green and gold. These colors have special significance in the Louisiana world of Mardi Gras. Purple means Justice. Green means Faith. Gold means Power. So, when someone tosses beads your way on Mardi Gras, grab their meaning, too!
