Good at All Jersey City Free Public Libraries

For borrowing books and for accessing the electronic resources available through this website on home computers, library patrons now use a yellow and blue, bar-coded library card, sized like a credit card. All library cards will begin with the numbers 27954.

You can obtain a card at the Main Library at 472 Jersey Avenue or at any of our branches. If you wish to prepare in advance, you may click on the Library Card Application highlighted below to print out the application form, then bring your competed application to the Jersey City Free Public Library with the appropriate documents as detailed below.

Free library cards issued to:
Residents of Jersey City: Anyone high school age or above must show the following documents:
A photo ID (such as driver’s license, school ID, or current passport)
Proof that you live in Jersey City, sent to you at your current Jersey City address through the mail within the past 30 days (such as a current gas/electric or water bill, medical statement, bank or credit card statement, or other legitimate mail). The following are NOT acceptable as proof of address: handwritten envelopes, leases, other handwritten items, bills printed from the Internet, checks, junk mail. You may not use a post office box as proof of your Jersey City address.

Anyone below high school age needs to have a current proof of his/her parent's address as indicated above. The parent or guardian must sign the back of the library card application. Parents/guardians are responsible for items/fees on their child's card (as indicated on the back of the Library Card Application).

Non-resident students:
Anyone who is actively enrolled in a Jersey City school or college is eligible to apply for a free JCFPL library card. Please show a current student ID, or a current bill for fees or tuition, together with a photo ID and evidence of your residential address such as the proofs listed above.

Non-resident employers and employees:

Anyone who works in Jersey City is eligible to apply for a free JCFPL library card. Please show a current payroll stub, or other employment ID, together with a photo ID and evidence of your residential address such as the proofs listed above.

There is no charge for an initial card; however, there is fee of $1.00 to replace the first lost card.
Library cards expire each year, but you retain the same card and card number. To renew your library card, show the appropriate proof of current address as listed above in the section about getting your first library card. Please also let the library staff know of any changes in telephone numbers or e-mail addresses, or any other pertinent information on your record.

Replacement library cards:
To obtain a replacement library card when you lose your card, you must show proof of address as indicated above and pay the fee as indicated below. Lost cards become invalid once they are marked lost in the computer system.

Replacement library card charges:
SENIOR CITIZENS (age 60 and above): All lost cards are $1.
YOUNG ADULTS (Grade 9 & ADULTS): 2nd & 3rd Lost Cards = $1; 4th Card & Beyond = $5
FOR CHILDREN (Grades PreK-8): All lost Cards = $1

Please Note: Children's Card histories stay with them for the rest of their lives That's why it is very important to make sure unreturned books and fines are kept to a minimum. TAKE CARE OF YOUR LIBRARY CARD!

Reciprocal Borrowers
A patron with a library card from another library in Hudson County, who is in good standing with that library, has reciprocal borrowing privileges at Jersey City Free Public Library, and may be issued a Jersey City Library Card. Procedures are required to become a Reciprocal Borrower at the JCFPL.
