Jewelry by Jay
Wednesday evenings in August at the Miller Branch Library of the Jersey City Free Public Library offer the public a special treat: the talents of a very special 9-year-old boy who is self-taught in the art of beaded jewelry-making.

Like many young children, Jersey City-resident Jay turns 10 in October and enters the fourth grade in the fall; however, unlike many children Jay has become so adept at his passion that he has already begun his teaching career.

“We are so happy to be able to showcase the artistic talents of this youngster, with the Miller Branch being the first – of many, I’m sure – places that will give Jay the opportunity to teach,” said Library Director Priscilla Gardner. “We’re excited that 25 people have come to the first class to learn from Jay.”

Jay works his magic in glass, wood and plastic beads, making earrings, necklaces, ankle bracelets and rings. He began making little projects for his mother to wear, and in doing so, then “wanted to do it for a lot of people.” All designs are of his creation. According to Jay, he has always been artistic, first drawing and painting.

His mother Lois can’t help but feel proud, stating that Jay made 180 pieces that were sold in a store in New York City, as well as selling jewelry through a former business at the Newport Centre Mall in Jersey City. She said that all her friends would ask, where did you get that? And in disclosing, her son Jay, there was no stopping the innate talents of this enterprising young artist.

Jay is teaching the creation of his ‘wearable art’ on Wednesday evenings at the Miller Branch Library, 489 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City, on August 8, 15, 22 & 29, 2007. Classes began last Wednesday, August 1. The classes run for two hours, from 6 to 8 p.m.
