William
Wendell Razim pioneered the concept of educating the public on health
matters by producing and hosting, Science for the People, broadcast from
1950 to 1959 on WEVD-AM, which, at the time, was a non-profit radio station
in New York City. Originally, Mr. Razim approached the new broadcast medium,
television, and was refused by all New York stations, as well as New York
radio – all, of course, except one. His decade-long efforts all
were voluntary.
For that contribution
to the public’s understanding of science, William Wendell Razim’s
biography is listed in Marquis’ Who’s Who in the World 2003,
20th Edition, 21st Century Editions.
His last contribution
benefits the public, as well. William Wendell Razim donated his
entire library of books and recordings to the Jersey City Free Public
Library. Amassed over nearly 40 years, the eclectic collection includes
books on history, philosophy and the complete works of literary greats
such as Shakespeare, Steinbeck, Hemingway and Faulkner, as well on subjects
of personal interest such as cooking. Of course, there are books on science,
many of which delve into the abilities of the mind to expand its intellectual
and memory powers.
His vast collection
of books, CDs, audiotapes and vinyl recordings, and VHS videotapes serve
as start-up inventory to stock the shelves of the now-dedicated William
Wendell Razim Used Book Store.
William Wendell
Razim was born in Union City, NJ on September 8, 1916, and lived most
of his life in Jersey City. He is a 1942 graduate of New York University,
with a post-graduate Certificate in Meteorology that was earned in 1943.
Throughout his long career, Mr. Razim was a chemistry professor, as well
as a technical writer and educational consultant, with avocations in botanical
science and music. He served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Forces from
1942-1945 as a 2nd Lieutenant. Currently, Mr. Razim had been a resident
of the Castle Hill Health Care Center in Union City at the time of his
passing on December 16, 2005.
